OFFICE OF THE ACADEMIC SENATE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, MERCED
RULES and ELECTIONS
MARTHA CONKLIN, CHAIR

December 21, 2007

Formal Ruling

The Rules and Elections Committee has been asked by Professor Shawn Kantor, Chair of the Division, to rule on whether the School of Social Sciences, Humanities and Arts needs to hold an election if there is only one candidate for each position.

At UC Merced, each School has its own Bylaws. This ruling is a general response, as the Rules and Elections Committee does not review School Bylaws.

Ruling:

Elections have to be held as described in the UC Merced and School Bylaws, unless it is explicitly stated that elections are not held if the number of persons nominated is not in excess of the number of places to be filled.

UC Merced Committee on Rules and Elections:

Martha Conklin, Chair
Daniel Simmons, Vice Chair (UC Davis)
Teenie Matlock
Jean Olson (UC San Francisco)
