The University of California’s system of shared governance makes us unique among public universities in giving faculty a full voice in the processes that lead to policies and decisions. An example of the mutually co-operative relationship between faculty and the administration is the recent development of a systemwide Rebenching Initiative. The UC system has been a model for other institutions of higher learning and has proven effective at maintaining the quality and stature of the University of California. The Academic Senate and UCM administration collaborate in all areas of campus life. Our joint work, conducted through the important principle of shared governance, includes the education of a diverse student body, the development of new and ongoing support for existing academic programs, support for the research endeavors of our faculty and graduates, and advice on personnel actions and budgetary decisions. The current system cannot function without full faculty participation. While at times this participation may seem burdensome it is evident that the dynamic nature of our campus is dependent upon it.
Teaching, research, and service go hand-in-hand and the Committee on Committees (CoC) believes that this is most likely to happen if faculty have a chance to express their own service interests as part of the process of populating the committees. Having this input from faculty will allow the Committee on Committees to achieve a better match between committee service and faculty interest and skills.
